Reading is at the Heart of our Curriculum

19 January 2022 (by admin)

An update on reading at our school including early notice of our Authors of the Month for February 2022

It has been fantastic to see pupils enjoying books by our authors of the month for January - Nadia Shireen (EYFS and KS1) and Patrice Lawrence (KS2). Our younger pupils have particularly enjoyed Barbara Throws a Wobbler and The Bumblebear by Nadia Shireen.

Advance notice that our authors of the month for February are going to be  in EYFS / KS1 - Inga Moore and in KS2 - Frank Cottrell Boyce. More details about these authors to follow soon.

Our EYFS / KS1 pupils are fully immersed again in their Read, Write, Inc phonics. Just a reminder that if you need any help or advice with supporting your child at home with their phonics please contact our Early Reading lead teacher - Mrs Griffin.

In our main entrance hall we have just put up a new display with quotes from our pupils about how they enjoy reading - it looks fantastic and it is great to read the positive comments from pupils about their reading. A photograph of this display is on our school Twitter feed.

In Key Stage 2 (KS2) pupils are continuing to develop their reading skills in guided sessions. Hopefully you will have heard our KS2 pupils referring to using VIPERS (Vocabulary Inference, Predict, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise / Sequence). These are the reading skills we are teaching KS2 pupils to use to help them decode and understand texts across the curriculum.

Finally remember that all parents / carers can support pupils with their reading by ensuring they heard them read and / or making sure pupils read at home and complete their Reading Records.

For any further advice regarding supporting pupils at home with reading please contact our English subject lead teacher - Mrs Smith.

Keep on reading!
